R&H Suburb Profile BEENLEIGH
Beenleigh is a suburb in the Logan City area of Queensland, located between Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. It was once a stand-alone town built on sugar and home to Australia's oldest rum distillery. However, it has since been enveloped by Brisbane and the Gold Coast due to increasing development since the 1980s.
Historically, Beenleigh's main industries have been sugar and beef. The abattoir was established in 1952 and is still one of the largest industries in Beenleigh.
Beenleigh has easy access to the national highway and rail networks, with QR Citytrain providing frequent services to Brisbane and the Gold Coast from Beenleigh railway station.
Still predominately a self-sufficient town with expanding retail and commercial areas close by, Beenleigh has three shopping centres with Coles Supermarkets, Woolworths, BI-LO, Big W, Mitre 10 Mega and Aldi represented. There are also several restaurants.
Three major high schools and several primary schools service the suburb. There is also a library, community centre and theatre. Social events include the annual Cane Festival and Beenleigh Show.
Sports include baseball, soccer, BMX, football, tennis, and swimming. Beenleigh has access to the river via boat ramp, located near the northern bridge.
