Gympie is a regional city in south eastern Queensland, about 160km (just over 2 hour’s drive) north of the state capital, Brisbane. Gympie is an old gold mining town situated on the Bruce Highway on the Fraser Coast, and is the administrative centre for the Gympie Regional Council area.
The city has 17,000 residents with a catchment of over 35,000. It offers the warm hospitality of a country town with modern conveniences. Gympie's Mary St offers a wide array of bars, cafes, banks and stores with 19th Century Victorian architecture. Gympie also hosts the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival in March.
Gympie boasts sporting venues, schools, churches, and shopping centres. The city's heart is Mary Street, a blend of shopping, heritage and nearby parkland.
And it's centrally located near the famous Rainbow Beach, the dolphins of Tin Can Bay, and the rural hinterland of the Mary Valley.
Gympie is known as the 'Town that Saved Queensland', after the Gympie Gold Rush injected a much needed boost to the state’s economy, enabling the colony’s survival.
Road connection to Gympie is via the Bruce Highway. Rail connects via QR's North Coast railway line, served by daily Citytrain services to Brisbane and Traveltrain services for long distances. There are few public buses in Gympie and private are the main mode of transportation.
Gympie has several private and public schools offering primary and secondary education. There is also the Gympie campus of the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE.
