- Could a tennis court ace your home’s value?
If you want to declare ‘game, set, match’ on boosting your lifestyle and property value, a tennis court could serve up a volley of great results.
The Aussie summer may be synonymous with sun, sand and surf, but not far behind is the promise of several glorious weeks of tennis.
It all starts with the Brisbane International.
But the real crowd pleaser is Melbourne’s Australian Open. It leads the big four Grand Slam tournaments each year, being held before the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
In 2025, tennis fans will be glued to their sets (or seats, for those lucky enough to have tickets to the Open) to witness the sheer talent and tenacity of local and international tennis stars.
Can Jannik Sinner repeat his 2024 Australian Open victory? Will our own Nick Kyrgios take out the title of comeback king? Can women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka take out three consecutive Aussie Open titles – a hat trick not completed since Martina Hingis in 1999?
All these questions and more will be answered in the weeks ahead.
But amid the excitement and inspiration of the Australian Open, some Aussie home owners will be left with a more pressing issue: Is it worth adding a tennis court to your home?
Adding a tennis court to your home
Tennis in Australia is big. Really big. It’s our third most popular club sport behind golf and soccer[1].
A whopping 43% of women and 57% of men play tennis.
With numbers like that, it’s hard to see how adding a tennis court to your home could be a bad move.
The catch is that tennis courts take up space.
A traditional court is 23.77 metres long and 8.23 metres wide for singles matches, or 10.97 metres wide for doubles games[2].
However, if you have the space, adding a tennis court to your backyard can be surprisingly affordable, and definitely a lot cheaper than installing a swimming pool.
According to trades site Hi Pages, it can cost between $5,000 and $20,000 to have a backyard tennis court professionally constructed[3].
Will a tennis court add value to my property?
For tennis lovers, being able to pick up a racquet and enjoy a few lobs just metres from the backdoor can be a valuable lifestyle decision.
It can also be a savvy financial move.
According to a Domain report, a tennis court can 'easily’ add $200,000 to the price of a home[4].
That’s not especially surprising as, unlike a pool, a tennis court is low maintenance and can be used year-round.

Of course, there may be no need to build a court of your own.
