Tranquil Daintree acreages proving the perfect escape from city COVID lockdowns

August 23, 2021

Highlights:

  • Raine & Horne Mossman has listed Lot 62 George Road Forest Creek for $195,000, a beautiful 5-acre property boasting a stunning rainforest backdrop with an access track, house pad and creek.
  • Around 60% of buyer enquiries for Daintree acreages are from southern state buyers, with 50% of these inquiries from those seeking to escape COVID city lockdowns.

Mossman QLD (24 August 2021) Lockdown-fatigued southern state buyers are leading the charge for extremely affordable properties within Australia’s world-famous Daintree Rainforest.

Daintree real estate specialist Mark Whitham from Rane & Horne Mossman said that southern state buyers represent around 60% of all buyers seeking to buy acreages in the Daintree, with the balance from Southeast Queensland.

“Apart from its natural beauty, the Daintree allows former city slickers to live a simpler life of their own making,” he said.

“Almost every property in this region is acreage. A small block is typically 2 acres, and the majority range between 2.5-to-3-acre blocks.”

Unique larger blocks at Forest Creek

Mr Whitham recently listed for $195,000 Lot 62 George Road, Forest Creek, a stunningly tranquil and oversized 5-acre property boasting a spectacular rainforest backdrop with an access track, house pad and creek.

“This is a great starting block for anyone wishing to move this superb area, along with nearby 56 George Road Forest Creek, another 5-acre property which is on the market for $215,000.”

Mr Whitham explains, “The second block is slightly more expensive as the land is very easy to use.

“That said, building a house on all acreages in the Forest Creek region is straightforward if you follow the local government regulations, while access to both properties is by gravel road, which is in good condition.”

He continues, “Both properties are attracting enquiries from people who want to move to the Daintree to escape the daily grind and the hustle and bustle of city living and, more recently, the added stress of lockdowns.

“Not only are they just two hours from Cairns with its international airport, but southern state buyers delight in the Daintree’s tranquillity, outstanding beauty, fresh air, and its pure clean and delicious water, which is the best in Australia.”

Living off the grid

Around 50% of those southern state buyers shifting to Daintree to escape COVID, with the remainder hoping to reduce the influence of governments and even energy companies on their lives, Mr Whitham said.

“Properties in the Daintree don’t have reticulated water or power, so every home built here must have these systems designed into it. In the case of power generation, solar systems must be built into the property, and rain tanks are used to capture water.

According to Mr Whitham, a common addition to most homes is a petrol or diesel generator which will charge batteries attached to remote area power systems on days where there’s reduced or no sun.

“There is a fuel tax credit of approximately 38 cents per litre of diesel or petrol used in domestic electricity generation. This expense is claimable from the Australian Tax Office. Many residents claim this subsidy for the fuel used in their generator.”

Home phone lines are available and connected at almost every residence, while Many homes in the region use satellite Internet and Satellite TV. Mobile phone reception is available in some areas.

The region also has a primary state school located in Cow Bay, and the nearest high school is 25 minutes away in Mossman.

“While the Daintree offers a simpler lifestyle, residents still have a broad choice of restaurants and cafes, retail outlets and petrol stations to support their lifestyle needs,” said Mr Whitham,

“As a Cow Bay resident since 2002 after moving from the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, there is no place on earth to live like the Daintree Rainforest.”
