A magnificent estate residence in Potts Point built in 1871 for the prominent Hordern family of retailer Anthony Hordern fame and a former residence for the future King Edward V will go under the hammer on 4 April 2023 after its current owners decided to move abroad.
Samuel Schumann, Managing Director of Raine & Horne Unlimited, has listed “Jenner House” at 2 Macleay Street with a price guide of $34 million.
Wide range of buyers from execs to developers
According to Mr Schumann, the stunning property is attracting the interest of a wide variety of buyers, including local C-suite executives, Australian and overseas-based entrepreneurs, expatriate Australians, and even developers, given the stately home is the centrepiece of a magnificent 1,970 sqm property with sweeping views across Sydney Harbour.
The quintessential six-bedroom, six-bathroom Georgian-Regency house known originally as “Stramshall” was designed in 1868 by the highly regarded colonial architect Edmund Blacket. Mr Blacket was the NSW Colonial Architect and Chief Architect of the Anglican Church.
The residence saw a third level added in 1881 by another distinguished architect of the period Thomas Rowe.
A home with a rich history
Mr Schumann said, “It’s such a versatile house, and over the past 150 years, its rich history includes the family abode for the Hordern family, a stint as a private hospital, a residence for a prominent British royal, and it was even used for a time by the Australian Navy.
“The home was occupied by the future King George V of Britain when he was Prince of Wales and during a visit with the Royal Navy to these shores and before he ascended to the British throne in 1910.
“We believe this stunning property will appeal to a family seeking convenience, lifestyle, and ample space. It’s just so rare to secure a property with almost 2,000 sqm metres virtually in the middle of town with a big harbour view,” Mr Schumann said.
“Sydney Harbour is visible from almost every room, which is simply stunning.”
Mr Schumann added, “The magnificent and expansive view features Clark Island and Shark Island directly in front of Jenner House.
“To the right is a delightful vista across Elizabeth Bay onto Darling Point, Point Piper, Watsons Bay South Head, and the North Head, Manly, Middle Head, Bradley’s Head, and even to Athol Bight, which is a popular anchorage spot to view the Sydney fireworks.”
Georgian artistry meets modern luxury
According to Jane Schumann, Director of Raine & Horne Unlimited, Jenner House showcases an array of extraordinary handcrafted antique materials, including eleven original 19th Century fireplace mantels, all crafted in white Carrera marble.
“The new owners of this exquisite mansion will also be able to enjoy year-round comfort throughout the home, with a selection of working log fireplaces, Jetmaster gas fireplaces, plus air-conditioning throughout,” Mrs Schumann said.
The stunning Georgian masterpiece is built on solid sandstone foundations with tripled layered brick walls and spectacular soaring 4.0-metre ceilings. Exquisite original Australian Cedar joinery adorns the elegant interiors, while the property offers French Oak Versailles parquetry floors, bay windows and French wall panelling.
“Other luxurious modern touches fit for a king include a full stainless steel chef’s entertaining kitchen incorporating professional-grade Baron appliances, including a range of ovens and grills and a commercial-grade dishwasher,” Mrs Schumann said.
The impressively scaled six-bedroom suites include full marble ensuites with claw-footed bathtubs and built-in robes.
Mrs Schumann adds, “The spectacular king-sized master suite wing includes a full marble 25 sqm ensuite dressing room and a generous master lounge that flows through French doors onto a harbour-view verandah.
“There is also a highly versatile sandstone lower level, complete with a wine cellar, tasting room and plenty of space for a gym, an artist studio and entertainer’s suite.”
The magnificent gardens contain the oldest prize-winning Camellias and Grandiflora Magnolia in the Potts Point area and two substantial alfresco entertaining areas. At the same time, the property has DA approval for a pool.
