WHAT'S AROUND THE CORNER? REDISCOVER SOUTH-EAST SYDNEY
We made it! We’re out of lockdown, warmer weather beckons us outdoors and everyone is smiling – even the dog. You don’t have to go far from home to find parks, picnic spots, golf courses and outdoor activities in and around Bexley and Beverly Hills. Over the years, we have fine-tuned our list of favourites – go on, get out there!
Parks
Nestled on the point where Wolli Creek joins Cooks River, just across from Tempe Station, Gough Whitlam Park provides wonderful space for picnics, family activities and outdoor recreation. You’ll find playgrounds, shaded barbecue areas and some lovely walks. It is also a great access point for the Cooks River Cycleway.
On the northern side of Wolli Creek, Girrahween Park offers shaded picnic tables in a delightful bush setting. The park is the kick-off point for the Wolli Creek walk along the Girrahween track. The track is an oasis of bushland, with interesting rock formations and overhanging ferns.
A short drive south of Bexley and Beverly Hills, Carss Bush Park is on the western shores of Kogarah Bay. Wide grassy expanses are perfect for picnics and there’s a shaded playground, barbecue areas plus a safe swimming area for the kids.
Golf and swimming
Right on our doorstep, off Stoney Creek Road, Bexley Golf Club is a local favourite. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the course, and staff at the pro shop are on hand to provide expert advice. Why not enjoy a snack or lunch before or after your round at ‘The Rustic’ with hosts Maria and Glen?
A gem of old-world charm, Kogarah Golf Club is a must for that special round with friends. Bookings are essential.
The beautiful Beverly Park Golf Club is an18-hole par 70 course that will satisfy every playing level. Complete the day with a memorable Italian meal at ‘Joe’s Kitchen’.
Bardwell Valley Golf Club, affectionately known as “the Valley”, has a challenging par 62, 18-hole course that runs through lush vegetation and tree-lined fairways. The clubhouse facilities include a bar, bistro and balconies that boast sweeping views of the valley and the course.
Whether you are looking for swimming lessons, lap swimming, gym facilities or fitness classes, the fabulous Angelo Anestis Aquatic Centre in Bexley North provides it all.
Hurstville Aquatic Centre is another excellent local facility that offers the BlueFit Health Club gym, pool and stadium, sports programs for kids and a cafe. The centre also runs before and after school care and organises birthday parties by the pool. Check out the Health Club with a free five-day trial.
For kids of all ages
Weather permitting, the enthusiastic members of the St George Model Boat Club have been meeting every Sunday from 10am to 2pm since 1986. There is a grassed area for picnics, and visitors are always welcome to discover this absorbing pastime. Scarborough Park, Barton Street, Monterey.
Calling all photographers
For nature lovers, the Wolli Creek walk, the walkway along the edge of Cooks River from Gough Whitlam Park and the Bardwell Valley Parklands, provides some scenic shots for the astute eye.
The shores of Botany Bay are rich with photo opportunities. With the afternoon sun behind you, look for amazing action shots of kite surfers as they become airborne off the waves.
For aviation buffs, there are some great vantage points around the international airport. All you need is a decent zoom lens and you will be perfectly placed to capture dramatic images of the big jets as they head off for the outside world once again.
