SUBURB SPOTLIGHT: ROSELANDS 2196

Roselands in Sydney’s Canterbury-Bankstown region holds the perfect balance of essential facilities and recreational options. The suburb is high on the liveability scale for young professionals and families alike, with their important needs catered to in and around Roselands.

Roselands history

First settled in 1842 when H.R. Morgan was granted a parcel of land. Other settlers followed and by 1895, the railway had arrived at Belmore, the neighbouring suburb. The name of the suburb is derived from the name of the plant nursery on the land ‒ later a golf course until the construction of Roselands Shopping Centre, one of the first enclosed shopping centres in Australia. Roselands became a suburb officially only in 1987 and still shares its postcode of 2196 with Punchbowl.

Roselands is a well-established suburb, with homes dating back to Federation. However, much of what’s on offer is firmly rooted in the1960s and 1970s. These mainly red or blonde brick buildings, while not as elegant as the few remaining Federation homes or California bungalows, have great bones. The ceilings tend to be marginally higher than more modern buildings and rooms are larger. The apartments are ripe for renovation to breathe new life into these reliably solid buildings. And property investors understand how these buildings hold their value.

Why choose Roselands?

The suburb and surrounding areas provide much in the way of essential services, with schools, shops and transport covered. Roselands Shopping Centre is a major local destination, with stores such as ALDI, Bakers Delight and many other everyday conveniences. There are also services for other needs like KMart Tyre & Auto and Charles Jewellers.

Schools and other educational facilities are close to Roselands, from the Ponyara Preschool that provides a stimulating, high-quality preschool program for children aged three to five years, or high schools such as the Holy Spirit Catholic College Lakemba or Arkana College that deliver faith-based curricula for children.

The nearby St George Hospital, an accredited principal teaching facility of the University of New South Wales with patients from around the state, provides first-class training to medical students and is the largest hospital in the region.

This 600-bed hospital also provides a substantial number of jobs to people living in and around the area, for professional positions or otherwise.

Using King Georges Road, Roselands is only a 15-minute drive to Sydney’s International Airport, a major source of jobs for people who live in and around the airport. In particular, many flight crew live in Roselands and nearby.

But it’s not all work and no play at Roselands. There are plenty of parks in and around Roselands to while away the time and enjoy the outdoors.
