5 CREATIVE WAYS TO ADD A SMALL OFFICE INTO YOUR HOME
Spending so much time in lockdown, working from home has become the new norm for many of us. Along with this workplace transformation comes the need for new ideas in creating the perfect small home office that provides the best of both worlds: work and home.
Even though some people have struggled through, waiting out lockdown and longing for their regular desk where everything is in the right place, others have embraced the change and have little interest in returning to the regular office environment. School-age children and home-based students also need somewhere they can study, and the more attractive their workspace is, the more likely they will be to use it.
Major stores that can help with small home office ideas, furniture, lighting, shelving, and equipment include Ikea, Freedom Furniture, Officeworks, and Bunnings. If DIY is not your thing, you can always consult a local interior designer or office fitout specialist; and don’t forget that many kitchen and wardrobe companies have branched out into home office design.
These clever ideas will help you convert even the smallest spaces in your existing home into the perfect home office.
1. Ladder shelves
Ladder shelving is an attractive way to have your business desk exposed without becoming an eyesore when visitors come over. With enough shelf storage and the right-sized baskets, everything can be conveniently tucked away and out of sight when it needs to be.
2. Hidden cupboards
It’s amazing what can happen in a cupboard under the stairs – just ask Harry Potter. With a little imagination and some help from one of the major stores listed above, you could create a custom-shaped office that has everything you need, from a bench desk and cupboards to a second seat for visiting colleagues. One of the bonuses of an under-stairs office is that you can put doors on it and close it off when your work is done for the day. Curtaining off the space will achieve the same result.
3. Corner spaces
Far too often corner spaces in houses and apartments are wasted. Used as hidden storage spots or vacant black holes that no one wants to acknowledge, these areas can be a treasure if used constructively in providing the perfect place to set up your home office or study nook. Look for combined desk and storage units that are designed to fit in corners; we like the look of these from Temple & Webster.
4. Hallway hideaways
Keeping everything neat and tidy is the aim here while making the most of unused space in your home. Head over to Freedom Furniture or your local Ikea store and choose a simple set of shelves that can be arranged along the length of the hallway. A longer and deeper shelf will also provide you with a sturdy desktop. Then all you will need are some well-chosen boxes and tubs to hide away all your books and work-related items.
5. Floor-to-ceiling shelves and desk
Sometimes the need for a wider space can be an issue in itself, but if you are able to find a spot that is wide enough for your desk, you could use the vertical space above it instead of spreading yourself along a bench. This way it is possible to conveniently store everything you need within an arm's reach – you just happen to be reaching up rather than out. Floating shelves and desktops create the illusion of light and space and make your home office a stylish addition to your living area. Store your least-needed things on the top shelves to keep clutter to a minimum.
